On the third Sunday of each month, we invite someone from our church family to share about what God has been doing in their lives. In September, David Bonner shared about how God has been drawing his heart towards Him.
David and his wife Sarah found Origins 10 years ago. Invited by a couple from their apartment complex, they decided to visit Origins. Despite growing up in the church, David’s first impressions of Origins were unlike his previous church experiences. There was something special about the community of Origins, and they have been a part of this family ever since.
During that time, David started a business. Over the years, his business grew and so did his passion for business growth and optimization. He would consume books and videos, deepening his understanding of financial success and strategies. “And it was just one of those things where, over time, I just started to get more and more obsessed with growing the business, making more money, and saving more money.” One day, while watching a popular financial advisor, he asked himself, “Why am I even watching this video? I already know what he’s going to say.” He had seen so many of this advisor’s videos that he already knew what advice was coming before it was even shared. That moment was the wake-up call.
As he compared that to reading through the parables of Jesus, “I [couldn’t tell you] what Jesus was going to say before he said it,” he confessed. “That to me was a problem.” In that moment, he realized he was more consumed with his financial growth and success than drawing closer to God. “It’s a constant struggle,” the pull of earthly things against God drawing his heart towards Himself.
In closing, David referenced this passage in Acts: “Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” It left him asking, “What am I known for?”
